Coming through, coming through...lady with a baby.

Diane and I have known Peggy since 1989. For years our lives were quite entangled, but as time passed, we began to loose day to day touch with Peggy. Last year Peggy got married and had her first child. A week and a half ago she had her second. Diane and I were told that the baby was born via a cell phone text message.

Dear readers, I really want your opinions on this one. Diane and I were appalled that we were given the news in this way. We thought it extremely impersonal and insulting. However, my sister-in-law said that this is becoming a more and more common method for new moms to let everyone know.

Now, Jessica is 10 years younger than me and Di -- is this just a generation gap thing? Or is it just rude? Anyway, the important thing is the baby (a girl) and Peggy are healthy. I just found this method of communicating a bit too impersonal for this news. I would have rather waited for an announcement via snail mail...there are some things I'm just holding on to like Emily Post in this crazy world of technology!

I don't know how I feel about that. I'd imagine a new mom has a lot on her plate and a blanket text message gets the word out without having to be on the phone with each person for 15 minutes or so during a very emotional (and sleepy) time. It's not as personable, but it got the job done in this case.

Hey BFF...

Yep, I'll agree with you on this one. VERY impersonal. Not into the texting thing, call me old fashioned..plus it costs me 20 cents per text! LOL

Hope all is well. And by the way...nice closet ;)

I'm guilty of this one. I think it's just the mix of excitement + exhaustion + painkillers that makes people want to immediately share what has just become the best news ever. I still sent out snail mail birth announcements, though. This may become my topic for today's post... hmm...

I've obviously never been in this position myself, but I think Karen hit the nail on the head. I think it's out of excitement and eagerness to share the news more than anything else. Keep in mind, this is baby #2, who came less than a year after baby #1 - maybe she just knew she wouldn't have the time for personal calls? Plus everyone wants the stats asap - and this gets the job done quickly. Would a phone call have been better? Absolutely, but at least you were thought of. I know Emily Post wouldn't have accepted this but I'm giving the lady a pass. Lord knows I'm going to want people to give me a pass if I ever have kids! :-) (I still hope she sends out birth announcements - I love me some baby photos!)
