I've always thought the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge across the Delaware was a cool old bridge. I cross it every morning on the way to work. However, on the way home I use the Betsy Ross. Why, you ask?
Well, the Tacony is good in the morning because it's further north and puts me on a better place on I-95. But, it's a very old bridge with only three lanes and it's not that tall, so it has to open up for boats to pass as they glide along the river. Only one lane of traffic can come back to NJ and God forbid the bridge needs to open up! You can sit in traffic forever.
Despite knowing this, every once in a while, I will take the Tacony exit home. And then I immediately regret my decision. Yes, there is only one lane of traffic back to my state. Yes, the cars are backed up forever. Yes, it's a mistake.
The thing is, although the Tacony is a good and sturdy bridge, it doesn't work for me. It is incapable of opening up, for it was built that way. It is happy being a testament to the past. There is nothing I can do to make it work, so I search for another bridge, for there are many to choose from.
Life is filled with detours and unexpected changes in direction. The only way to cope with it is to accept that not everything is in your control and you can only do so much to steer the coarse of your journey. However, you can't continue to make the same mistake over and over again.
I stopped taking the Tacony back to NJ, for it doesn't want to get me there. I'm just looking for a bridge to bring me home.

Whoa- some serious metaphor there Jen! I live with the metaphor King, so I saw where that was going :)
Jennifer, I always liked the saying "You can't change the wind but you can always adjust your sails."
Love you, Aunt Roe
