My Children Will Do It Differently

No, I was not alive to witness the racial strife that ran rampant in the 1960's, but as a lover of all things historical, I have learned my fair share of this shameful time. And, no, I will never know what being the target of discrimination feels like, but as a human being I can imagine the sheer indignity.

Today we all witnessed the United States change forever. I watched history today and things will never be the same. I am in awe of my own country for it is now lead by an incredibly learned man. A man who is the son of a Kenyan immigrant. A man who was raised by a single mother. A man who has helped this country turn a corner it so desperately needs.

And so, I think we can all feel confident that the generations that follow us will now live in a different America. Like President Kennedy said in his 1961 Inaugural Address, "Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans."
