Am I what I drive?

I heard someone say recently, "You are what you drive."

"Yikes," I think. "What a snotty thing to believe."

And then I think of me and my car and I realize Ginger (yes, my car has a name) and I are quite similar.

1. We are both aged with very low mileage - Ginger is nine years old and has under 50,000 miles on her. It is part of a space-time continuum that I don't understand. I drive a lot. I have taken that car to Maine three times and yet she has low mileage. I, too, look pretty good for my age. I am currently pushing 36 and most people think I am under 30.

2. There are some parts that still look great, but aren't working like they used to - Ginger's moon roof motor has died. Similarly, my back gets sore when I lay on the floor. The point is, we're not performing as well as we once did.

3. Red - Ginger is fire-engine red. I wear fire-engine red nail polish. We are both colorful.

4. Reliability with flair - Ginger will get me where I need to go. However, while she is dependable, she always looks nice and stylish. I, too, am very grounded and reliable, but I am so with a nose ring. It's all about the accessories.

5. A long-term investment requires maintenance - I have cared for Ginger for nine years. She has gotten oil changes and tire rotations. I need waxes and dyes and such to keep me going. Attention to the smallest details is key.

6. Potential wild child - I don't drive fast, but Ginger has the capacity to be driven like a wild child by the right person. I suspect I am the same.

So there you go. Maybe you are what you drive.
