I got the ball rolling on a big life change this evening. Let's just say after I rolled the ball, I went to PetSmart and bought Meow Mix and a litter box.
That's right, kids! I went to the Animal Orphanage of Voorhees tonight and adopted two darling little cats. It was fate too. I wanted two cats so they have each other for company, but I was weary about putting two cats together who didn't know one another already. I told this to the woman at the shelter and she said they had two cats surrendered just yesterday. The owners gave them up because one of the cats is afraid of their children.
I went back to meet them and fell in love. They are both shorthairs. One is pitch black and named Shadow. The other is calico and named Cali. So they're not the most clever names, but I feel bad changing them. (I was thinking George and Gracie after George Burns and Gracie Allen.) They are both a year old and each have all four paws declawed.
I put in my application and left, hoping I would hear tomorrow if I was approved or not. To my surprise, my phone rang within 10 minutes! They had gotten through to my apartment complex and my vet for a background check and all was well! Shadow and Cali (George and Gracie) are mine!
I don't think I will pick them up until Friday evening though because I feel bad bringing them to a new home and leaving early the next morning for work. It would be nice to be here with them Saturday while they assimilate.
It's been 10 weeks to the day since I lost Saffron. I honored her in two ways tonight. First, I opened my wounded, yet healing heart to two animals in need. Second, I donated $100 in her name to the specific care of one of the dogs at the Animal Orphanage who has heart worm. And just when I thought I was coping, the girl writing out the donation form asked, "In memory of?" "Saffron," I replied, then burst into tears.
The pain is lessoning, but not gone. I am, however, looking very much forward to loving and caring for these new little creatures. I can't wait to bring you home Shadow and Cali (George and Gracie)!

Congratulations on your new babies!!
Just a quick note on your new additions. When you bring them home your cats may bury themselves under the couch or a chair for a while until they feel safe enough to come out. This is totally normal and you shouldn't panic over it. My Sara hid under the couch for 2 days when we moved to Pennsylvania. They'll come out when they are hungry or need to use the litter box, and in no time you'll have two wonderful companions.
Can't wait to meet them.
That was a beautiful tribute to Saffy. I'm so happy for you. And ya know what - they're cats - you should call them George and Gracie. They'll just be happy to be loved.
