The tradition is...well, it's a butter sculpture for the table. When I was growing up we always had a "butter lamb" on the Easter table. For those of you not familiar with this cholesterol wonder, it's just butter that is sculpted into the form of a lamb. Two years ago, my mom went to the supermarket to purchase one and she was appalled by the price so she decided she would sculpt her own. And she did a great job. Last year she told us she was going to make a new butter sculpture, but wouldn't let us know what it was going to be. She surprised us with an Easter basket filled with colored eggs -- and it was all made of butter.
She told me last weekend that she is going to blow us away with her design for this Sunday, but there was one problem...she needed a one pound butter brick. The artiste couldn't possibly work with 4 sticks of butter. And that was my quest...to find a one pound brick of butter.
Okay, so as far as quests go, it doesn't sound like much. But, I had to visit Wegman's, ACME, Genaurdi's and ShopRite to no avail. And let me tell you, I was getting pretty tired of wandering through supermarkets to find the dairy case. I was desperate. I was tired. But I would not be defeated? What food store would have such an odd item? What market would go beyond the 4 stick and whipped varieties of this churned delight? Where???
Alas! I get back in my little car and drive to Marlton. I walk in Trader Joe's and make my way past the granola-types as they debate the cage-free white eggs versus the cage-free brown eggs. And what to my wandering eyes do appear? One pound butter bricks!
It's official. I am the best daughter in the world.
Here's a picture from last year. Sadly, I cannot find one of her debut butter lamb.

Holy shit! You all have too much time on your hands-where do I sign up? THAT is amazing!
Hi, Anonymous. The sad thing is, no one has too much time on their hands. We just don't sleep at all.
Jen, that was me. I checked the wrong thing. Where's the pic of your mom's masterpiece from yesterday? Can't wait to see it.
